Running your own AI means the model lives on a machine in your house instead of
a company's data center. No monthly bill, no usage limits, and nothing you type
leaves the building. The tradeoff is that you buy the hardware once, and how
much you spend decides how capable your AI is.

Here's the honest map of the options in 2026.

## What decides how good your home AI is

One number matters more than any other: **how much memory the AI chip can
reach.** A model has to fit in that memory to run well. More memory means bigger,
smarter models.

- **8–16 GB:** small models. Fine for simple tasks, noticeably limited.
- **24–32 GB:** mid-size models. This is the sweet spot for most people —
  capable enough for writing, summarizing, answering questions, working through
  ideas.
- **48 GB+:** large models that start to feel like the paid services.
- **96–128 GB:** the biggest models people run at home.

Everything else — processor speed, brand, how many cores — matters far less than
getting enough memory. Buy for memory first.

## How the picks break down

**If you want it to just work:** the [Mac mini](/reviews/mac-mini-m4/) with
24–32 GB. Apple's shared-memory design punches above its price for AI, it's
silent, and it costs under $10 a year to leave running. Don't buy the 16 GB base
model.

**If you're testing the waters:** the [Beelink SER8](/reviews/beelink-ser8/) at
around $520. It runs mid-size models at a usable speed. It won't do the biggest
models or fast image generation, but it's the cheapest machine I'd actually
recommend, and you can add memory later.

**If you want to run the large models:** a 128 GB machine like the
[Framework Desktop](/reviews/framework-desktop-395/) or the GMKtec EVO-X2. These
hold models the other picks physically can't. $1,500–2,000, but it's the
difference between "capable assistant" and "genuinely impressive."

**If you already have a gaming PC:** drop a used
[RTX 3090](/reviews/nvidia-rtx-3090-used/) into it. 24 GB of fast memory, the
quickest responses here, and every AI tool supports it with zero fuss. The
downsides are power draw (about 350 watts working) and that it needs a full-size
case.

## What I'd actually do

If I were starting today with no hardware and a normal budget, I'd buy a Mac
mini with 32 GB and a $100 external drive. Under a grand, silent, done.

If I had $2,000 and wanted this to be a real project I'd grow into, the
Framework Desktop, because 128 GB opens doors that don't close.

And if I already had a PC with a spare slot, a used 3090 is the cheapest way to
the fastest experience — just mind the power bill.
